From the ALex Lomax Collection! The Alan Lomax Collection gathers together the
American, European and Caribbean field recordings, world music compilations, and
ballad operas of writer, folklorist and ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax.
Alan Lomax's efforts have enriched and informed us all. His influence on popular
music is undeniable. Musicians from Pete Seeger to David Byrne sing his praises.
Not only was Alan one of the first to record music from all over the world, he
uncannily knew how to find the best songs, the best singers, no matter what the
language or the culture. To quote noted journalist and author Nat Hentoff, "No
one has come close to Alan Lomax in illuminating the intersecting musical roots
of an extraordinary range of cultures, including our own. These recordings
abound in knowledge and unexpected pleasures."
American Roots Music Originals! The Alan Lomax Popular Songbook brings together
for the first time the original field recordings of the best-known songs
recorded by folkorists John and Alan Lomax. Later made popular by artists such
as Moby, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater
Revival, The Byrds, Eric Clapton, Steve Miller, Miles Davis, Grand Funk
Railroad, The Beach Boys, Little Feat, Robert Palmer, The Animals and many more,
these songs laid the foundation of the roots music explosion of the 1960s and
beyond. Contains a previously unreleased version of one of the earliest
recordings of “House of the Rising Son.”
24 bit remastering by Bob Ludwig and Adam Ayan.
"Lomax was capturing the human spirit in song. He was working at a
grass-roots level, recording people in their homes and their towns. And he
wanted - and still wants - that human spirit to connect in a real way to other
people in their homes and towns all over the world. The music moves us... not
only because the traditions it documents are disappearing - but because it lives
and breathes anew each time it's heard." - David Greenberger, NPR's All
Things Considered
