Amina Claudine Myers is joined by bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Jimmy
Lovelace for this tribute to Bessie Smith.
Amina Claudine Myers is an original pianist who displays her gospel roots when
she plays organ or sings.
Myers began singing and playing keyboards as a child in church choirs in the
Dallas, Texas area. After graduating from Philander Smith College in Little
Rock, Arkansas, she moved to Chicago to teach music. While there, she also
attended classes at Roosevelt University and worked with Sonny Stitt and Gene
Ammons among others.
Myers pays tribute to Bessie Smith, referred to by some as "The Empress of the
Blues", who sang the blues in the 1920s and '30s.
