Lady Soul, recorded in 1968, cemented Aretha's place in music history as a
true diva, high above the rest. Along with the Muscle Shoals studio band and
back up vocals by the Sweet Impressions, Aretha Franklin delivers top notch
entertainment with "Chain of Fools", "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman",
and Ray Charles' "Come Back Baby". Lady Soul became Franklin's second gold LP
and stayed on the charts for over a year.
"Franklin's third Atlantic album in less than two years is another classic, from "You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman)" and "Ain't No Way" to the slinky version of the Rascals' "Groovin'." It was a year of triumph and turbulence for Franklin: Although she made the cover of Time, the magazine reported rocky details of her marriage to Ted White, then her manager. But Franklin channeled that frenzy into performances of funky pride and magisterial hurt. Among the best: the grand-prayer treatment of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" and her explosive anguish on the hit cover of Don Covay's "Chain of Fools." - www.rollingstone.com
"The second of four hits from 1968’s Lady Soul, this kissoff [Chain Of Fools] was written by Covay as a straight blues about field hands in the South. Covay reworked the lyrics for Franklin; producer Wexler cooked up the propulsive stomp. When songwriter Ellie Greenwich heard the track in Wexler’s office, she suggested an extra vocal-harmony part, which Wexler got her to sing on the final master." - Rolling Stone
