Very few bands have lasted so long with their original line-up intact, and
fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work as Cowboy
Junkies. Albums like "The Trinity Session" (1988), "Black Eyed Man" (1992),
"Miles From Our Home" (1998), "Early 21st Century Blues" (2005) and "Trinity
Revisited" (2007) are just a few of the milestones which chronicle a creative
path that has remained impervious to trends.
With 25 years under the hood and, for the first time in twenty years, free of
any recording contracts, the creative juices have begun to flow with renewed
energy for the Cowboy Junkies. Therefore, on their very own Latent Records, the
Cowboy Junkies have decided to release a series of four albums collectively
known as the Nomad Series.
Titles included in this four volume series include Renmin Park, Demons, Sing In
My Meadow and The Wilderness.
Demons, the second volume, is a collection of songs by the late Vic Chesnutt,
described by Michael Timmins as "a labour of love" that explores Chesnutt’s deep
and much overlooked catalogue. "Demons" follows the critically acclaimed first
volume of the series, "Renmin Park", which The Boston Herald called "their most
ambitious album yet."
Cowboy Junkies’ brief journey with Vic Chesnutt began in the mid-'90s when they
stumbled upon his album, "West Of Rome". They had just begun work on the songs
that would become "Lay It Down" and decided to throw the title track of Vic’s
album into the mix. They worked on the song for weeks but were never able to
match its wistfulness, its forlornness or its honesty. They were never able to
replicate the way the song just simply and effortlessly existed as recorded by
The band approached Chesnutt's music with the same sense of adventure that
Chesnutt approached his own recordings. Timmins says, "We let happy accidents
happen and tried to invest his songs with the same spirit in which they were
written, but at the same time adding our own Northern spin. Exploring his songs
and delving deeper and deeper into them has been an intense, moving and joyous
experience. I don’t think Vic would have wanted it any other way."
"Demons" will be followed by volumes 3 and 4 of the series ("Sing in My Meadow"
and "The Wilderness").
