The band members share equal responsibilities for the music’s unfolding, and the
bass’s gravitational pull coupled with the intense percussive detail are crucial
to the range of emotions the music can convey. Gentle but insistent rhythms can
trigger seismic musical events.
Founded in 1999, the Colin Vallon Trio is one of the most original formations of
European jazz. After "Les Ombres" in 2004 and "Ailleurs" in 2006, the third
album of the Trio "Rruga" was released in 2011 under the international label ECM
Records. The album was acclaimed upon release by the international critics.
Colin Vallon does not indulge in demonstrative virtuosity or in a potential game
- although he has mastered both aspects. It combines a deep sense of restraint,
with an unusual melodic intensity. The sounds of his prepared piano, whether
lyrical or gritty, melodious or abstract, give his game a strange and wild
beauty that seems to bring forth new territories.
There are two kinds of bassists, those who want to overcome the gravity of their
instrument with a demonstrative virtuosity and those who put this force of
gravitation at the service of music. Patrice Moret is in this second category.
With an exceptional melodic sense, and an unshakable rhythmic seating, he
invests the depth of his musical personality in every note he plays.
Julian Sartorius redefines the role of drummer. He is a colorist who weaves his
rhythms in the background and marks the music with his unique colors. It is a
virtuoso that never lets speak its extraordinary virtuosity in vain but uses it
to open doors on new musical spaces. Always in search of original sonorities, he
constantly reinvents his instrument by making his own percussion elements.
