Rare Find, Long Out Of Print!
Reflecting his growth and maturity as a jazz musician, Ken Peplowski's popularity is increasing as his relationship with Venus Records is deepening. After a couple of smash hits, Memories Of You and When You Wish Upon A Star with his own quartet, Peplowski changed directions with his third release from Venus Records.
Gypsy Lamento is Peplowski's tribute to the legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. No less than six of Reinhardt's compositions are included, and reminiscent of his group, Peplowski chose to play with two guitarists, a bassist, a drummer and a violinist. And what guitarists he has chosen! You cannot hope for a better guitar duo than Bucky Pizzarelli and Howard Alden, two masters who are absolutely brilliant on this wonderful album.
Peplowski's sound and phrasing on clarinet and tenor saxophone are gorgeous, and he proves he is one of the best players around in both instruments. On a few numbers he even overdubs both instruments and has a conversation with himself. The keywords here are pathos, swing, and joy. The musicians, all masters of their instruments, are playing their hearts out! Highly recommended!
Produced by Tetsuo Hara and Todd Barkan. Recorded at The Studio in New York on November 23 and 24, 2007.
