Kick Out the Jams was the 1969 debut album by the hard punk rockers that were MC5. The album was recorded live at Detroit's Grande Ballroom over two nights, Devil's Night and Halloween 1968. The album peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 chart with the title track peaking at No. 82 in the Hot 100.
Upon release, the album received unfavorable reviews from Rolling Stone magazine, but has gone on to be considered an important forerunner to punk rock music and in 2020 was ranked number 349 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.
Controversy surrounded this album upon release due to the opening line to the title track when vocalist Rob Tyner shouted "and right now... right now... right now it's time to... kick out the jams... M**F**er!". After one department store refused to sell any album from Elektra due to the controversial album and subsequent issues, the label dropped the group in order to end the conflict and avoid further financial loss.
