O Brother, Where Art Thou? is the soundtrack album of the 2000 Coen Brothers film starring George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, and John Goodman. Includes 14 new tracks not included in the original album, "including 12 previously unreleased cuts from music producer T-Bone Burnett's O Brother sessions."
Nearly every scene in O Brother is set to a period song, and the music frequently drives and defines the action. These recordings, which were made without the meddling clarity of digital technology, give the film much of its power and authenticity.
With the film set in Mississippi during the Great Depression, the soundtrack, produced by T-Bone Burnett, uses bluegrass, country, gospel, blues, and folk music appropriate to the time period. With the exception of a few vintage tracks (such as Harry McClintock's 1928 single "Big Rock Candy Mountain"), most tracks are modern recordings. It has been a huge commercial success winning three Grammy Awards including Album of the Year in 2002.
Loosely based on Homer's "Odyssey," the movie deals with the picaresque adventures of Ulysses Everett McGill and his companions Delmar and Pete in 1930s Mississipi. Sprung from a chain gang and trying to reach Everett's home to recover the buried loot of a bank heist, they are confronted by a series of strange characters--among them sirens, a cyclops, bank robber George "Baby Face" Nelson, a campaigning governor and his opponent, a KKK lynch mob, and a blind prophet who warns the trio that "the treasure you seek shall not be the treasure you find." Sometimes, you have to lose your way to get back home!
