Blues Recordings On Vinyl LP!

Produced by Norman Granz, this volume of Jazz At the Philharmonic contains blues songs that were recorded on the road in October 1955. Oscar Peterson, Illinois Jacquet and Herb Ellis are joined by jazz all-stars Lester Young, Ray Brown, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, and Flip Phillips.

The 1955 JATP tour of the U.S. began in Hartford, Connecticut, and ended six weeks later in San Diego, California. The concert was taped in Chicago during the middle of the tour which was a bit unusual since most of the recorded JATP concerts since 1949 had come from Hartford or New York, stops which came very early in the tour. Stan Getz was to join the JATP tour in 1955, but he ran into scheduling problems and Lester Young was brought back aboard at the last minute as his replacement. One of Norman Granz's recent best-selling LPs had been the Dizzy Gillespie-Stan Getz encounter and he was anxious to showcase the pairing on the JATP tour. Because of the Getz situation, The Challenges, which had been a part of the show in 1954, was dropped in favor of a The Swing Set and The Modern Set concept. The fortuitious result is the only known occasion (heard here in The Modern Set) when Gillespie and Young played as the sole horns in a small group.
