The 1972 self-titled album from Paul Simon was released nearly two years after the musical duo of Simon & Garfunkel split up. The album served as the definitive announcement of the breakup. It is ranked at No. 425 on the list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All time.

Some up and coming musicians at the time assisting on this album includes Ron Carter (bass) and Stephane Grappelli (violin) as well as keyboardist Larry Knechtel from the band Bread.

The hit single "Mother and Child Reunion" reached #4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts and was one of the earliest songs by a white musician to prominently feature reggae elements.
