Released in 1972, "Talking Book" is Stevie's fifteenth album and the second of
five consecutive albums referred to as his "classic period." It is considered by
many to be his greatest and most influentual album. A perfect blend of funk,
rock, soft-rock, soul, gospel and smooth jazz. The popular appeal of the record
destroyed the myth that R&B artists were incapable of creating music that could
be appreciated by rock audiences.
"I don't think you know where I'm coming from," Wonder warned Motown executives in 1971. "I don't think you can understand it." Indeed, the two albums Wonder released in 1972 ? Music of My Mind and Talking Book rewrote the rules of the Motown hit factory. Talking Book was full of introspection and social commentary, with Wonder producing, writing and playing most of the instruments himself. "Superstition" and "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" were Number One singles; "Big Brother" is political consciousness draped in a light melody: "You've killed all our leaders/I don't even have to do nothin' to you/You'll cause your own country to fall." - www.rollingstone.com
"Talking Book" finds Stevie Wonder in complete control by writing, producing and
performing most of the memorable emotion-packed, magical music himself. Wonder
won three awards for "Talking Book" at the 1974 Grammys: Best Male Pop Vocal
Performance for "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," and both Best Male R&B Vocal
Performance and Best R&B Song for "Superstition".
From this point forward, few people saw him as the kid that made "Fingertips"
anymore but one of the brightest and most creative music stars of the 70's.
"Altogether, an exceptional, exciting album, the work of a now quite matured
genius." - Vince Aletti, Rolling Stone
"Wonder originally wrote and recorded 'Sunshine' while he was finishing his 1972 LP Music of My Mind, but he decided to hang on to it until his next album, Talking Book. He had written the song for future wife Syreeta Wright, who had met Wonder at the Motown offices, where she was a secretary. The cut was Talking Books second Number One hit, following 'Superstition.'" - Rolling Stone
