"At the under $2000 price point, the new low output Soundsmith Zephyr MIMIC Star is an overachiever that gives you a glimpse of the best in terms of non-mechanical, artifact-free performance, for a small percentage of the state of the art asking price. With measured 36dB chancel separation the Zephyr Star’s spatial performance is up there with the best at any price, as is its smooth, reasonably fast and non-mechanical overall demeanor."
"If you crave more tightly drawn, solid and compacted images, sharper, faster, better focused transients and blacker backgrounds they can be found, but at a far higher price-point. Soundsmith’s new Zephyr Star is a star." - Michael Fremer / analogplanet.com
Zephyr MIMC was the entry-level to the high-performance world of Soundsmith's MC-pre-compatible, low-output cartridges. It brought a very nice portion of the performance available in their higher-end MC-compatible cartridges (Paua, Sussurro, Hyperion) to the more affordable sub-$2k category. Recently, Peter Ledermann decided to see if he could stretch the limits of the MIMC's performance even higher without stretching past the $2k price point ... little did any of us know how far he would be able to take it! The updated Zephyr MIMC Star smashes through sonic barriers with its new laser-drilled Sapphire cantilever and select nude Contact-Line diamond stylus! This is probably the most important Soundsmith model to have in your arsenal. It brings an astounding portion of the performance available only in our top-level low output cartridges, and it does it for just $1,999 retail (USD)!
An Unparalleled Warranty:

||Everything about this is better!
|Thanks again for your phono cartridge recommendation of the Soundsmith MIMC Star and for making the trade-in process easy/hassle-free. I had no reason at all to doubt your recommendation, but I was just not prepared for how much I would enjoy this cartridge replacement. After a few setup/tweak/re-adjust iterations of dialing in my VPI arm/table with this cartridge and ~30 hours of playing time, I have become even more pleased with the reproduction of sound from my VPI Scoutmaster than you indicated I should expect.
I hear nothing but “quiet” between tracks, the soundstage has more depth, there is tighter/deeper bass, a more natural “life-like” feeling from the center of the soundstage and voices project so clearly in front of the band instruments. Everything about the sound from this cartridge upgrade is better, more balanced and the lingering decay of cymbal strikes as well as piano/guitar string notes remind me of live performances. To me, it sounds like “I just upgraded my phono stage & pre-amp…” and my vinyl collection is “like-new”.
Many thanks to you for guiding me to an improved vinyl listening experience.|
||Almost as good as Sex!
|My gear. VPI Classic 1 VPI 299D amplifier. Jolida JD9 preamp. Focal Aria 900 series speakers. Went from a Ortofon 2M Black to this manna from heaven. So much more laid back in a good way. I could and have listened to this cartridge for hours with no fatigue. The sound just opened up and got wide and spacious. I have never heard this much stereo separation and imaging in my life. Good call from Sam over there. Plus, Peter over at Soundsmith was all too happy to answer all my set up questions. Money well spent!|

||Soundsmith Zepher MiMC Star
|So far so good. Not sure of the breakin time of this cartridge, but it is sounding excellent. Extremely quiet cartridge, tracks well and has a great soundstage. I would compare it to my Dynavector XX2. Havent done a direct comparison because I think the Dyno needs a retip. At any rate the soundsmith is a nice full sounding cartridge, which is my preference.|
||Great Value / Sounds Amazing / Two Thumbs Up
|Incredibly accurate and totally balance. This cartridge really brings out the best in your records, biggest improvement I noticed was a drastic reduction in noise transferred from the record. I would highly recommend any Soundsmith cartridge, but especially this one because if its reasonable price. Make sure you have an adjustable MC Phono stage, because it has quite specific specs to sound Best.|

||Holy Shit! - This thing sounds amazing.
|The single best upgrade I have ever made to my Vinyl Playback chain /system...and I added an MX-1 Cyclone this year!
Mounted the MIMC Star on my Clearaudio Turntable and from the first note I have been hooked.
Its now 48 hrs since I finished set up - a breeze thanks to the Instructions and Printable Gauge that Soundsmith provides - and I have done little else besides sit in front of my speakers and awe at what I am hearing.
My Records have never sounded this detailed and this huge.
The increase in both the depth of field and the width of the soundstage are hard to believe. The space this thing creates is uncanny and the results are revealing a much more than nuanced improvement than I expected when transitioning from an MM cart.
Records that I have known for decades, both inside and out, are breathing anew. Passages from one favorite so notably improved that they inspire me to go back to the shelves and pull something else just to see how much better it will sound than the last time I listened to it...
Like I said, I am hooked and I took it deep. I am a committed and official Soundsmith Fan.
I cant thank you guys enough for recommending this Cartridge to me!|
