While in New Orleans completing the recording of Big Whiskey, DMB contemplated
many ideas for the next album cover. Producer Rob Cavallo suggested the band

Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King comes at a pivotal time for the Dave Matthews Band. After grappling with the death of founding saxophonist LeRoi Moore in 2008, the band carried on and completed their first record in four years. The result is a tribute to Moore, featuring his nickname as the album's title as well as many lyrical allusions to him throughout. This record also sees the band returning to their roots, with a sound more reminiscent of their first three releases and a deliberate absence of the glossy sheen that has permeated their work since the turn of the millennium.
