Sixteen Tons was a hit song sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford. The song was written by Merle Travis and is based on life in the coal mines in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Some of the lyrics in the song came from actual sayings by his father and brother from real life experiences.

The 1955 version of the song recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford reached number one in the Billboard charts.

The album Sixteen Tons was released in 1960. Tennessee Ernie Ford (Ernest Jennings Ford) was known for his rich bass-baritone voice and down-home humor.

Now reissued on vinyl in celebration of Capitol Records' 75th anniversary.
