The Foo Fighters' new album Concrete and Gold is their first release since
2015's Saint Cecilia EP, and lead singer Dave Grohl can't wait for fans to hear
it. In an interview with BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac, Grohl had this to say:
"Without telling anybody we've been in the studio for the last 6 months and we
made the biggest sounding Foo Fighters record we've ever made. I'm not just
saying that. Basically I said to [producer] Greg Kurstin, 'I wanna make a record
that sounds like Motorhead doing Sgt. Peppers,' and he was like OK, and so we
recorded an 11 song record with him. Honestly, I think it's going to take a lot
of people by surprise. Every band says it's the best record they've ever made,
but wait till you hear it, it's definitely the hugest thing we've ever done.
Basically, I can't wait for people to hear it. This is the first record I've
been this proud to play for people. Other albums I've been insecure and this one
I'm like, 'Listen to this!' The first song is called "T-Shirt", you gotta be
careful when it kicks in. Just don't be driving when you hear it for the first
time. We have a bunch of guests we haven't told anybody about, some that will
really surprise you. There is one who is probably the biggest pop star in the
world and I'm not kidding sings backup on one of the heaviest songs on the
record, and we're not telling anybody who it is."
Grohl also penned a note to fans on the Foo Fighters website:
DEAR EVERYBODY –
REMEMBER THAT "BREAK" WE WERE TAKING?
WELL…. WE LIED.
WE JUST SPENT THE LAST 6 MONTHS SECRETLY MAKING A GIGANTIC NEW FOO FIGHTERS
ALBUM WITH OUR FRIEND/GENIUS/MASTERMIND GREG KURSTIN THAT WILL UNDOUBTEDLY FRY
STEREOS FROM HERE TO FUKUOKA. START SAVING YOUR SPEAKER MONEY NOW. SORRY. IT’S
IT’S CALLED CONCRETE AND GOLD, COMES OUT SEPT. 15TH, AND HAS MORE TWISTS AND
TURNS THAN A LIVE SENATE HEARING. LIKE A BOX OF REALLY LOUD CHOCOLATES. HOPE
"Finally, Dave Grohl's inevitable transition into a flannel shirt-wearing
Freddie Mercury-with-tats is complete. Kicking off the ninth Foo Fighters album
with one minute and 22 seconds of Queen-worthy bombast, the glistening sonic
flare that is 'T-Shirt' sets the tone for a blistering, high-gloss 'Concrete and
Gold', a record that features some of the band's most vital and impressive
tracks in years... The Foo Fighters' ninth is a little bit Queen, a little bit
Prince and a lot great." - Leonie Cooper, NME
"'I don't wanna be king/I just wanna sing a love song,' declares Dave
Grohl – a default mission statement from the eternal sideman-turned-frontman. It
opens what might be his group's most polished set, produced by pop guru Greg
Kurstin, who sweetens the Foos' hard rock hooks without de-fanging them. The
paradigmatic 'The Sky Is a Neighborhood' is latter-day Beatles with Queens of
the Stone Age crunch; 'Sunday Rain' even has Paul McCartney playing drums on it.
From stadium dive bombers like 'Run' and 'La Dee Da' to the acoustic soul that
opens 'T-Shirt,' it's classic rock from a punk who never stopped believing."
