No Overdubs. No Editing. Direct-To-Acetate Recording. Mixed in Real Time & Instantly Cut to Vinyl Using a 1953 Scully Lathe, Formerly of King Records. The Blue Room is One of the Only Live Venues in the World with Direct-To-Acetate Capabilities.

The Shins' story begins in Albuquerque, NM, in 1996. Brought together by a genuine love of pop music – and subsequent eschewal of college aspirations – singer/guitarist James Mercer, drummer Jesse Sandoval, keyboardist Marty Crandall and bassist Dave Hernandez formed The Shins. Mercer had taught himself to play the guitar as a teenager, while listening to bands like My Bloody Valentine and Echo & The Bunnymen. With time, he developed a more pronounced interest in ‘60s pop and the art of well-crafted songwriting. Mercer’s aesthetic, paired with the like-minded sensibilities of his bandmates, gave rise to this most friendly troupe of disbelieving pop heroes.

What can be said about The Shins that hasn't already been said in miles of press? They're one of the best bands out there today and Third Man Records are still honored thinking back to the night James Mercer and his band came to the Blue Room to play live and record a live LP for them, October 8, 2012. This show holds a particularly special place in their hearts, as it was the inaugural groove-carving voyage of their 1953 Scully Lathe that previously churned out masters for Cincinnati’s legendary King Records. The 8 tracks on this live recording mark their first ever cut live direct-to-acetate, and they couldn't be more pleased with the way this turned out.

"We believe that this new/old method of recording is as honest as it gets, bringing listeners as close to the experience of the performance as possible (of course, that is until our team of talented engineers and tinkerers manage to gather all the necessary parts to get our time machine and teletransporter back up and running.)" - Third Man Records
