Wagner Siegfried Hybrid Multi-Channel & Stereo 4SACD
Featured in Kalman Rubinson's Music in the Round in the July 2007 issue of Stereophile!
Four-disc set in a magnificent series of SACDs of Wagner music by the
Adelaide Symphony Orchestra conducted by Asher Fisch.
In our past description of Wagner's Die Walkure, we pointed out how the
composer's Ring Cycle presented massive challenges for the recording industry.
In fact, one could show how technical advances could be measured using The Ring
as a musical yardstick! Certainly with the advent of tape recording each of the
operas could be recorded complete during live performances at the Bayreuth
Festivals. The coming of stereo produced the landmark cycles by both Sir Georg
Solti and Herbert von Karajan. Finally, in the 21st century, the operas are
being presented in SACD for the first time by the Melba label and the State
Opera of South Australia. Siegfried continues this groundbreaking series,
presented, as before, in a hardbound volume with color production photos and
essays on the opera, together with a full libretto. This series has received
glowing reviews in the European press so far. For the listener who has the
appropriate surround-sound equipment, these releases promise a real sensation of
being in Adelaide, Australia in 2004 where the performances took place.
