When the first Jimi Hendrix Experience single appeared in the summer of '67, many thought it was just the umpteenth version of "Hey Joe". The rather anonymous cover didn't show any pictures of the group, and only after having listened to it could one realize that the song represented a transition from the first to the second psychedelic phase. The B-side "Stone Free" made clear the striking force produced by the band. The second Jimi Hendrix Experience single, "The Wind Cries Mary", bears the date of October 21, 1967 on the vinyl. This is one of the most suggestive psychedelic ballads that the history of rock recalls. The second Italian 45rpm had intended to be "Purple Haze", but its release was inexplicably blocked, although it had already been assigned the catalog number NHJ 59072. It was replaced by "The Wind Cries Mary", which also turned out to be the band's third best-selling single. "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp" is another important milestone for the careerr of the brilliant Steattle guitarist. The song is one of those jewels that adorn rock music and, at the same time, the peak of Hendrix's great creativity. The single "Foxy Lady" had been released on the Italian market on January 16, 1968, with "Manic Depression" on the flip side. On July 16, 1968, PhonoGram distributed "Purple Haze", an enthralling and transgressive piece, backed with "51st Aniversary". "Up From The Skies (If Six Was Nine)" is certainly considered the rarest single of the entire Italian Hendrix Experience record production. Initially scheduled for May '68, it reached the stores only in August and is one of the most sensational missteps in the history of rock discography. Instead of "Up From The Skies" (the title is naturally shown on the cover and on the label), the second part of "If Six Was Nine" was included exactly as it appears on Axis: Bold As Love. So, in addition to a wrong track being included, there's 3/4 of a song rather than the full one! One might think that anybody who worked the two tracks had been infected by the lysergic atmospheres of Hendrix's music...
