Here are the classic treasures encapsulated in this 5 SACD limited box set:

'Round About Midnight
'Round About Midnight was the first recording with Davis's new quintet, composed of Philly Joe Jones on drums, Paul Chambers on bass, Red Garland on piano, and a young John Coltrane on tenor sax. Featuring standards like "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the title track "'Round Midnight," this album is considered by some to be one of the pinnacles of the hard bop era.
Musicians:
Miles Davis, trumpet; John Coltrane, tenor sax; Philly Joe Jones, drums; Paul Chambers, bass, and Red Garland, piano.
"Musically, this sound is as unusual and as beautiful as it was when issued in 1956. Davis had already led the charge through two changes in jazz -- both cool jazz and hard bop -- and was beginning to move in another direction here that wouldn't be defined for another two years," - Thom Jurk, allmusic.com

Milestones
If anything, Milestones is as famous for its title track as the players that produced it. The launching pad for many of Davis' (and later, his contemporaries') improvisational flights, the singular piece invites the tessellated explorations Coltrane would forever chase as well as the headliner's argyle solo work, who broaches territories that far exceed what he had done with his bop-rooted past. Every song is a highlight, whether it's the bravado "No Jackle," featuring a hot-foot pace and bebop strains, or "Sid's Ahead," which continues the album's blues theme while tossing around edgy harmonics and inside-out structures.
Musicians: Miles Davis, trumpet, Piano ("Sid's Ahead"); Cannonball Adderley, alto sax; John Coltrane, tenor sax; Red Garland, piano; Paul Chambers, double bass, and Philly Joe Jones, drums.
"What is immedately noticeable upon listening to Miles Davis' classic first -- and only -- album with his original sextet is how deep the blues presence is on it. Though it's true that the album's title cut is rightfully credited with introducing modalism into jazz, and defining Davis' music for years to come, it is the sole selection of its kind on the record." - Thom Jurek, allmusic.com

Porgy And Bess

On their second conceptual album together, Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans offered up a profound reinterpretation of George Gershwin's famed opera Porgy and Bess. A landmark release in orchestral jazz and arguably the best of their many collaborations, Evans' adaptation of Gershwin's score here is a veritable tour de force and although the outing features strong performances from Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), Paul Chambers (bass) and Jimmy Cobb (drums), Davis' poignant trumpet playing is the unequivocal star. Transcendent material like "Summertime" display the true beauty of Miles Davis and Gil Evans' collective genius, their ability to reach the listener on not only a musical level but an emotional one as well.
Musicians:
Miles Davis, trumpet, flugelhorn; Ernie Royal, Bernie Glow, Johnny Coles and Louis Mucci, trumpet; Dick Hixson, Frank Rehak, Jimmy Cleveland and Joe Bennett, trombone; Willie Ruff, Julius Watkins and Gunther Schuller, horn; Bill Barber, tuba; Phil Bodner, Jerome Richardson and Romeo Penque, flute, alto flute & clarinet; Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, alto saxophone; Danny Bank, alto flute & bass clarinet; Paul Chambers, bass; Jimmy Cobb, drums; Philly Joe Jones, drums, and Gil Evans, arranger & conductor.
"Tomes are available annotating the importance of this recording. The musical and social impact of Miles Davis, his collaborative efforts with Gil Evans, and in particular their reinvention of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess are indeed profound. However, the most efficient method of extricating the rhetoric and opining is to experience the recording. Few other musical teams would have had the ability to remain true to the undiluted spirit and multifaceted nuance of this epic work. However, no other musical teams were Miles Davis and Gil Evans." - Lindsay Planer, allmusic.com

Sketches Of Spain

The most luxuriant and stridently romantic of all of Davis' recordings, Sketches of Spain pairs Davis with arranger and composer Gil Evans, with whom he had collaborated on several other projects, on a program of compositions largely derived from the Spanish folk tradition. Recorded between November 1959 and March 1960 - after Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley had left the band - the album features performances by Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and Elvin Jones.
Musicians:
Danny Bank, bass clarinet; Bill Barber, tuba; John Barrows, French horn; Albert Block, flute; James Buffington, French horn; Eddie Caine, flute, flugelhorn; Paul Chambers, bass; Earl Chapin, French horn; Jimmy Cobb, drums; Johnny Coles, trumpet; Miles Davis, trumpet, flugelhorn; Gil Evans, arranger, conductor; Harold Feldman, clarinet, flute, oboe; Bernie Glow, trumpet; Dick Hixon, trombone; Elvin Jones, percussion; Taft Jordan, trumpet; Jack Knitzer, bassoon; Jose Mangual, percussion; Jimmy McAllister, tuba; Tony Miranda, French horn; Louis Mucci, trumpet; Romeo Penque, oboe; Janet Putnam, harp; Frank Rehak, trombone; Ernie Royal, trumpet, and Joe Singer, French horn.
"Recorded between November 1959 and March 1960 -- after Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley had left the band -- Davis teamed with Canadian arranger Gil Evans for the third time. Davis brought Evans the album's signature piece, "Concierto de Aranjuez," after hearing a classical version of it at bassist Joe Mondragon's house. Evans was as taken with it as Davis was, and set about to create an entire album of material around it. The result is a masterpiece of modern art." - Thom Jurek, allmusic.com

Miles Smiles
Except for the taping of a live performance at the Portland Festival, Miles Davis's discography for 1966 only lists the recordings made for the LP "Miles Smiles"! How strange when one considers the usual large output of Miles and his ensembles for Columbia Records in the Sixties. The bass player Ron Carter was best suited for the complicated rhythm part and remained Miles's 'number one' in a quintet which gave a new interpretation to compositions by Wayne Shorter and jazz hits such as "Freedom Jazz Dance" by Eddie Harris and Jimmy Heath's "Gingerbread Boy".
Musicians: Miles Davis, trumpet; Wayne Shorter, tenor saxophone; Herbie Hancock, piano; Ron Carter, bass, and Tony Williams, drums.
"With their second album, Miles Smiles, the second Miles Davis Quintet really began to hit their stride, delving deeper into the more adventurous, exploratory side of their signature sound. This is clear as soon as "Orbits" comes crashing out the gate, but it's not just the fast, manic material that has an edge -- slower, quieter numbers are mercurial, not just in how they shift melodies and chords, but how the voicing and phrasing never settles into a comfortable groove. This is music that demands attention, never taking predictable paths or easy choices." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic.com

"Miles sounds as if he's standing a few feet in front of the speakers. Switch to the SACD layer and the stage becomes even more spacious and open, giving the players room to stretch out physically and, in a very real sense, musically as well... [I]f you can play CDs, the Esoteric box will prove an eye-opener. And if your system is SACD compatible, this is the Miles Davis set to own." - Alan Taffel, The Absolute Sound, April 2017
