Willie Nelsons' 27th studio album, released in 1982, was the Billboard number one country album of the year and stayed 253 weeks on the Billboard Top Country Albums charts peaking at number one for 22 weeks.

During recording sessions for Nelson and Merle Haggard's collaboration album Pancho & Lefty, the producers suggested they record Johnny Christopher's "Always On My Mind". Haggard had no interested in recording the song so Willie recorded his own version which would be the first song for his album "Always On My Mind". The remainder of the album contains adult-contemporary and pop standards including "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "The Party's Over".
