Conducted with Passion, Vitality, Transparency & Crisp, Sharp Attacks! Includes Star Soprano Lucy Crowe! Excellent Sound & Presentation!

David Bates leads the ensemble La Nuova Musica in a pair of contrasting settings of Psalm 109. Handel's masterful and ambitious HWV 282 was penned in 1707 during a visit to Italy. Vivaldi's vivid and economical RV 807 (his third Dixit Dominus) was long mistakenly attributed to Baldassare Galuppi; it probably dates from the early 1730s. Rounding out the program is Vivaldi's dazzling motet In furore iustissimae irae, featuring soprano Lucy Crowe.

"Some 30 singers and players make up the early-music group La Nuova Musica, which is led by David Bates with passion, vitality, transparency, and crisp, sharp attacks... One can sense both the great operatic and oratorio composers Handel was to become: the choruses are vibrant and layered, the solos filled with lovely melodies and some fine, virtuosic writing... The Vivaldi setting... is a dazzler... Star soprano Lucy Crowe shows up for the Vivaldi motet, wildly acrobatic and embellished, with a dashing attack on the opening text... Sound and presentation are all one could want." - Robert Levine, Stereophile, June 2013, Rated 4.5/5 Performance, 3/5 Sonics

"The instrumentation matches that of Vivaldi’s famous Gloria, RV 589, though the Dixit Dominus is somewhat more intense than the prevailingly jolly and upbeat Gloria...[I]f you love Vivaldi’s Gloria, you’ll certainly very much like the Dixit... Clearly, as in [Handel's] remarkable set of Italian cantatas written for Roman patrons, the twenty-two-year-old Handel wanted to outshine his Italian competition—and pretty much did so in music of rugged brilliance and beauty... David Bates and La Nuova Musica really ratchet up the excitement and intensity in both works, but especially in the Handel. I’ve never heard the last section (et in saecula saeculorum) zip along at such a rapid pace—and without seeming hardship on the excellent voices of the group. Then there’s Lucy Crowe’s beautiful singing of the Vivaldi motet—not new to the catalog either, yet I doubt there’s a more flavorful rendition available. With an opulent surround-sound recording from Harmonia mundi, this disc has much to commend it, even if you’ll end up duplicating one or more of the works on the program." - Lee Passarella, audaud.com, 5 Stars!
