Kalman's greatest popular success, Die Csardasfurstin (The Gypsy Princess), is a marvelously varied score, without a single weak number. The characters are vividly etched, the comic dialogue, centered on a mismatch between aristocrat and showgirl, is still generally funny, and the volte face which transforms doom and gloom into a happy ending is a classic of its kind.
