Live in Gdansk is the monumental live album by David Gilmour - singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist of Pink Floyd. This incredible concert, the final stop on the critically acclaimed 2006 "On an Island" tour, was held in a renovated shipyard in Gdansk before a crowd of 50,000 fans. The grandeur of that performance has been beautifully presented on this 5LP set.
Zbigniew Preisner, who was responsible for the arrangements on Gilmour's On an Island, conducts the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra here does not detract nor overpower. Instead, textures and dynamics are elevated, working in tandem with Gilmour's fantastic mastery of both instrument and voice. The psychedelia of original Floyd material truly shines; this is classic rock rendered in a classical way, and it is nothing short of brilliant.
With the unfortunate passing of keyboardist and original Pink Floyd member Richard Wright just one week before its release, Live in Gdansk has acquired even more of a special meaning for Floyd fans. It is thus bittersweet to delight in such a wonderful performance by two historically significant rock musicians joining for this extraordinary event.
This limited edition 5LP box package includes the entire live concert on LPs 1-4, bonus tracks on the fifth LP, 20-page booklet, double-sided poster, and a web pass (designed to resemble a back-stage pass) to download the entire album. Bonus tracks consist of unreleased tracks from the 2006 tour and brand new jams. Everything is housed in a beautifully constructed and rigid box.
"I just got a chance to listen to this Box Set and I thought Pink Floyd was in my House! WOW! Don't Miss This One!" - Bob Bantz/President Elusive Disc, Inc...and Pink Floyd Fan.
"...a guitar lover's fantasy, with the iconic Brit weaving clean notes, sharp leads, and soulful psychedelia through early Pink Floyd gems such as "Astronomy Divine." A 40-piece Orchestra joins for three songs, providing sonorous melodic padding. Gilmour leaves no doubt who does Floyd best; former mate Roger Waters' recent forays into the band's arena-rock period look positively commercial by comparison." - Bob Gendron, The Absolute Sound, November 2008, Issue 186
"Utterly engaging, entertaining, and … emotionally moving" - Thom Jurek, allmusic.com
